It does use rechargeable NiMH battery packs. The charging cradle and battery packs (rated at 550 mAH) are included. It can also use AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries (requires 4 per unit), but an additional charger is required as the AAA batteries can't be recharged while in the unit (the battery packs can).
