Though the product states it is able to broadcast 30 miles, it may be more or less depending on a number of factors. First, if you are able to use a local repeater in your area (with permission) while in GMRS mode, you may actually be able to transmit much further than their specified range, perhaps hundreds of miles. Second, to use the GMRS mode you need to purchase a $85/5 year license from the FCC, GMRS mode also allows you to broadcast with up to 5 watts. Finally, if you have not purchased the license you are likely (or should be) using these in the FRS mode broadcasting at only 1/2 watt. In ideal conditions of hilltop to hilltop you may be able to get up to 40 miles with FRS. More realistic conditions with obstructions of trees and/or building you will get anywhere from 1/3 to 1 mile.
